"two shoes for dancing"

a solo visual art exhibition by iwan effendi
performance by maria tri sulistyani

..it's a story of oui....
the guy who always wants to wear shoes, on his "feet"..
...but he never can't...

"It was an evening of of magical realism, story telling, total installation, suspension of disbelief and contemporary fairy tales. Through a combination of paintings, drawings and puppetry: an important folk culture medium that is seen less and less in the 21st century, we experienced an intimate, fanciful, and surreal happening."

"RIA's Gifts FROM KOREA", a presentation of Ria's Residency in Korea

...a presentation about my residency time in Hooyong performing Arts Centre, South Korea. it was presented in a puppet play about my journey in Korea....
I made a new puppet, and Dwe Rahmanto (a friend, video editor), helped me to compile some photos with narration and music, then projected behind the puppets.
This performance was presented in Open House of IVAA (Indonesian Visual Art Archieve), on July 2, 2009.

"thank's for the performance. it's great! so touching... it's weird, but my tears dropped when i saw your performance..." (ani himawati, researcher)

"your performance was lovely..." (lieke, kindergarten teacher)

"it's Cool!!! a very interesting way to tell about a journey.I really love it!!! thank's... you have a soft but strong hands " (chia, a friend.. loves to take pictures)

MAU APA ???

It's a collaborating work between Maria Tri Sulistyani (Artistic Director of Papermoon) with Anna Loewendahl (Director of Transvision Arts, Australia) which is having her Asialink Artist Residency Program in Papermoon Puppet Theatre.
"MAU APA ???" is a performance held in the markets, both traditional market and Sunday market.
We made a small research about the stuffs we want "to sell".
Then we decided to sell abstract things, such as "Love, Faith, Power, Long life, Thin, Partner for you son/daughter, Going to Mecca, Health and Money"
The story of the performance is based on the interaction between the puppets and the audience who sits on the "hot seat".

We used Indonesian and Javanese language in the performance.
Yosafat "Jordana" Diaswikarta played Bejo's puppet, a character who was left by his beloved girlfriend, had his shoes shop on a bankrupt condition, and had a bestfriend Bredjel (played by Maria Tri Sulistyani), an old woman, who lost her family because of a very bad disease.

This interactive play was played twice on June 20-21, 2009 in two different markets.
as this performance is a new form of theatre in Indonesia, publics made so many interesting response.

We hope that we can play this role in different places, so we can find many different important things from people who lives in different area.

my presentation in Hooyong Performing Arts Centre

This is my last project in the end of my residency period in Hooyong Performing Arts Centre, South korea.
After staying for one month, i made 2 projects, they are 5-days puppet play workshop for teenagers in Hanal Alternative School, and a mini performance with 2 Korean actor and actress.
I made the puppet from found objects, and i used garbages as the properties.
I took the story from my impression about Korean daily life...
and also about my feelings during the residency period...
"Nothing perfect, honey... I say Sorry", was my first performance abroad.
